My Story: From Service to Advocacy
I joined the Army at just 17 years old. I had finished high school early, but like so many young people, I didn’t have the resources to pursue college. The military offered a solution—a chance to serve my country and earn the education I dreamed of. What I didn’t realize at the time was that it would also shape me into the person I am today.
During my four years of service, I gained more than just job skills; I learned discipline, pride, integrity, and the value of brotherhood. The Army instilled in me qualities that I carry to this day, and I am forever grateful for that. I served in South Korea and completed two tours in Iraq—experiences that were both challenging and life-changing.
The Struggle to Seek Help
While I was in the military, I began to notice symptoms—aches, pains, and mental instability—that I brushed off as temporary or insignificant. Like many service members, I told myself it was just part of the job. After I left the military, those symptoms persisted, and in many ways, they worsened. Still, I ignored them, unwilling to admit I needed help.
For a long time, my pride held me back. I didn’t want to be labeled as “disabled.” I didn’t want to admit that I felt broken. But eventually, I learned that filing a claim wasn’t about admitting weakness—it was about receiving the care and compensation I had earned through my service.
The Roadblocks and Frustration
